POSITION SUMMARY

This position performs waived and non-waived tests as defined by CLIA ‘88 in an accurate and timely manner with supervision. Assists with department compliance with all pertinent laboratory accrediting agencies and regulatory requirements (e.g., CLIA ’88, JCAHO, CAP, OSHA). Personnel report to department supervisor.

CORE FUNCTIONS

1. Performs testing in an accurate and timely manner according to established policies and performance standards with a knowledge level determined for that testing. Responsible for startup, calibration and accuracy of procedures and instrumentation. Exercises independent judgment and can identify appropriate resources in performance of assigned duties utilizing knowledge and skills. Demonstrates comprehension of theory and clinical relevance of testing. Demonstrates problem resolution and decision making skills for routine operational and technical problems. Demonstrates knowledge of computer systems used in the department and can perform basic troubleshooting of computer problems. Demonstrates awareness and complies with accrediting agency and regulatory requirements related to area of responsibility.

2. Recognizes and ensures validity of abnormal patient and/or QC results for testing. Ensures accuracy of test results. Participates in detecting and documenting occurrences that deviate from defined procedures. Demonstrates appropriate resolution and follow through for problem solving identified during testing. Promotes and consistently meets department standards for productivity and quality.

3. Ensures the appropriate use of supplies and materials and assists with inventory management. Ensures efficient utilization of reagents and supplies. Recognizes and provides input towards opportunities for improvements in financial performance to decrease costs, improve productivity, and improve service.

4. Self-directed and motivated to contribute to projects identified by the supervisor, with the completion of a minimum of one project per year. Seeks out opportunities to identify projects relating to department needs. Active in training and competency of laboratory personnel. Performs well in supervisor’s absence and provides guidance on issues relating to pre-analytical, waived and non-waived testing. Completes training module for newly hired/transferred personnel.

5. Communicates courteously, professionally, effectively and accurately with internal and external customers. Participates in the resolution of communication issues. Knows and utilizes appropriate resources for increased levels of problem solving. Demonstrates good verbal and written communication skills. Promotes positive communications that enhances teamwork. Attendance and participation at staff meetings.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

+ Associate’s Degree in medical laboratory science, OR

+ Bachelor's Degree in chemical, physical or biological science, OR

+ Have successfully completed military training of 50 or more weeks and served as a medical laboratory specialist. Military must be a high school graduate or equivalent.

+ Basic Computer skills.

+ Students may be hired at the job title equivalent to their future certification under the following conditions: Student is enrolled in a clinically recognized program (MLT), student’s clinical rotation in the core area must be completed prior to working in that core area and student must complete the MLT program within one year of hire.

Responsibilities Job Summary Performs a variety of tasks requiring skills in phlebotomy, and general office to include customer service, clerical and computer/data entry. Organizes, prioritizes, and obtains blood draw requests. Includes TRAUMAS, STATS, ASAP, TIMED, morning draws, and routine requests as received Operates the hospital tube system to receive incoming specimens, distributes to appropriate area, send labels for collection, and sends reports and other requested items, according to hospital policy Receives outpatient laboratory specimens and requisitions according to department policies, assuring correct specimen type, and verifying complete patient identification information. Operates the Hospital Information System, to order, cancel, add lab test requests, and retrieve patient information and specimen collection summaries, registers patients, fax and print chart reports. Removes bar code labels and distributes and organizes them for daily procurement. Greets all visitors, patients, customers, and staff at the reception window or designated area. Operates telecommunication equipment including telephones, pagers and faxes. Responds to queries, takes detailed messages, forwards test results, and directs calls to appropriate areas. Maintains equipment and supplies, blood collection tray, work areas and outpatient drawing stations. Handles incoming and outgoing mail for physician, patient, and department distribution. Oversees the training of new employees and assists the supervisor in the coordination of the daily work assignments. Interfaces with nursing in the absence of the Team Leader and Supervisor to resolve most complaints in phlebotomy, specimen receiving and processing and customer service. Phlebotomist Job Responsibilities:

+ Serves patients by identifying the best method for retrieving blood samples and other specimens, preparing specimens for laboratory testing, and performing screening procedures.

+ Verifies test requisitions by comparing information with nursing station log and bringing discrepancies to the attention of unit personnel.

+ Verifies patient identification and explains sampling procedures to patients.

+ Obtains blood specimens by performing venipunctures and finger sticks.

+ Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department procedures, and observing isolation procedures.

+ Collects therapeutic drug-monitoring assays by collaborating with nursing personnel to ensure appropriate drug dose to collection time.

+ Tracks collected specimens by initialing, dating, and noting times of collection and maintaining daily tallies of collections performed.

+ Monitors glucose levels by performing bedside glucose tests, recording results, and reporting results to unit nurse-manager.

+ Performs bleeding-times tests by entering results to the computer and notifying pathologist of results falling outside normal ranges.

+ Maintains quality results by following department procedures and testing schedule, recording results in the quality-control log, and identifying and reporting needed changes.

+ Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures and complying with legal regulations.

+ Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the physician, pathologist, nursing station, or reference laboratory, referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification, and notifying supervisor of unresolved orders.

+ Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, and participating in professional organizations.

+ Serves and protects the hospital or healthcare facility community by adhering to professional standards, institutional policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements, and Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO).

+ Reassures patients who are nervous about sampling procedures and applies dressings to wounds created by blood draws.

+ Updates patient records.

+ Maintains an organized and clean workspace.

Description:

Performs phlebotomy on patients using various phlebotomy techniques (straight needle, butterfly) in a hospital setting. Will not be giving injections, blood draws only.

CURRENT OPENINGS:

1st Shift (5:00 AM - 1:30 PM) -- no shift diff x 3 (24 hrs per week)

2nd Shift (1:00 PM - 9:30 PM) -- 10% shift diff x 1 (24 hrs per week)

3rd Shift (9:00 PM - 6:30 AM) -- 18% shift diff x 5 (27 hrs per week)

All require rotating weekends and varying weekdays. Schedule is made a month ahead of time.
