Responsibilities Directs the operation of a wildland fire engine ensuring the correct positioning, proper use and operation. Performs and directs others in starting pump engine, priming pump, adjusting engine speed and pump valves, laying hose and in the operation and maintenance of chainsaws. Conducts and participates in crew proficiency checks and drills, safety sessions, and fire critiques. Ensures the engine is kept in a full state of readiness for emergency fire dispatch. Gathers and considers information on weather data, topography, fuel types, and fire behavior in responding to wildland fire incidents. Makes initial evaluation of fire situations; determines suppression methods to use, deployment of module/crew, type of tools to use and application of water. Responsibilities You will respond to fires and fire related emergencies involving structures, aircraft, motor vehicle, wildland, and hazardous materials. You may be assigned to any position required such as nozzle, hose or hydrant, search, rescue, ventilation, or any other assigned duties. You will inspect structures and hazardous areas for compliance with Marine Corps Orders, Base Orders on Fire regulations and National Fire Codes. You will inspect fire extinguishers, fire hydrants, sprinkler and alarm systems. You will respond to all emergency medical related incidents and will be required to administer emergency care in accordance with standard operating procedures. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications GS-05: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Performing firefighting duties as part of an emergency response team in structural, emergency medical, hazardous materials, emergency services communication and fire prevention. GS-04: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-03 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: (1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) rescue operations; (3) detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; (4) operation of fire communications equipment; (5) controlling hazardous materials incidents OR (6) developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Education In lieu of specialized experience listed in the Qualifications section, applicants may qualify based on equivalent education, as follows: GS-05: Successfully completed a 4-year course of study in an accredited college of university with major study in Fire Science, Fire Training, or related fields of study. OR Possess a combination of specialized experience and education that equates to one year of experience. The percentage of the required education plus the percentage of the required experience equal 100 percent. GS-04: Successful completion of a 2-year course of study in an accredited college or university in Fire Training, Fire Science, or other related fields of study. OR Possess a combination of specialized experience and education that equates to one year of experience. The percentage of the required education plus the percentage of the required experience equal 100 percent.
